What Do You Want To Be?
A while ago, I was sitting outside eating lunch, and a trio of high school girls were sitting on a nearby bench. I overheard one of them ask the others, "What do you want to be when you grow up?" and this time, my brain came up with the best answer I've ever found to that question. In the silence of my own skull, it said plainly,

Rich enough that I don't have to choose.Really, I do envy the family of characters in that silly series of Egypt mysteries, because they're a family of wealthy intellectuals, who have the luxury of all pursuing their own studies of interest. I am, of course, particularly jealous of the son, who has made a name for himself in philology. Oh, to spend all the time I wanted on studying languages, often in their country of origin...

Dear Dana,
About a year ago I decided to chuck it all and do just that--"spend all the time I wanted on studying languages...in their country of origin."
Since then I've been to India (Hindi), Spain, and now Greece. In three weeks I leave for Egypt.
My experience has been mixed. I really love doing this, and plan to keep at it indefinitely. On the other hand, I haven't really gotten very good at any of these languages, partly because I'm lazy and partly because I'm finding it weirdly hard to make contacts with local people so I can use what language I have learned (beyond "How much?" "1, 2, 3...", "Too much!").
So here I am, trolling the internet, looking for someone to talk to about these things! (I found your site on Yahoo's directory of language/linguistics blogs).
If you (or anyone reading this) want to compare notes on learning languages while surrounded by them, e-me at:
