Love as a Four Letter Word
Given all the linguistic blog coverage of taboo language lately, I was amused to hear this song on the radio on my way home tonight:

"Love You"Another neat and tidy way of avoiding saying "fuck," but I doubt the New York Times will be adopting it as a new stylistic convention.

I adopted this word substitution. years ago to talk about "'love me' shoes" in so-called polite company. The weird thing is, I have been known to use the real word, some days more than others, but I can't bring myself to type it out on the Internet.
I admit that I did have to debate whether to put in an asterisk or not, but all my reading about taboo language lately has made me less squeamish. Did you read Neil's post about obscene sexual expressions?
I did. It was oddly charming, especially the charts. It made me think about my own lexicon, if you will, of such words and phrases, how my use of them has evolved over the years, and the negative or positive connotations I assign them.
