Deaf Culture and Language Politics
I've been following the NPR coverage of the student protests at Gallaudet University with interest. For those who haven't, or have no idea why Gallaudet is unique, well, the opening blurb of the most recent story sums it up nicely:
She's deaf, but some protesters don't like that she grew up speaking and reading lips, before she learned sign language.
Deaf Culture, to me, seems to be in a rather unique place, in that it is so inextricably linked to its language. Many Deaf Culture supporters don't just want people to treat deaf people like normal human beings, they want deaf people to accede to and conform to a distinct culture apart from the culture of the hearing. The idea that Fernandes learned to speak vocally and to read lips says to them that she will be a president of the college who will be more willing to bend to pressures from "the outside." Kind of a touchy subject, since the president she is taking over from, I. King Jordan, was the first deaf president of the college, ever. (To be clear, he supports Fernandes and is saddened by the protests.) The use of sign language is to some the only acceptable form of non-written speech, and is often used as the demarcating line in the sand.
When I was briefly able to take an ASL class while in college, I really enjoyed our instructor's explanations of different aspects of Deaf Culture. The positive and affirming aspects of it are excellent, and the sense of community is very empowering. But then I also hear stories about DC advocates who claim that deaf children born to hearing parents should be taken away and placed with DC approved deaf families, so that they might grow up only among "their own kind," and needless to say will always speak through signing.
I thought they also did a really good job of showing the two sides of this struggle several years ago on the TV show ER, when Peter's son was diagnosed deaf and he immediately began considering a cochlear implant. As the explanatory website there states, "An implant does not restore normal hearing. Instead, it can give a deaf person a useful representation of sounds in the environment and help him or her to understand speech."
The doctor he was consulting with about his son, though, was also deaf, and she argued with him convincingly about allowing his son to grow up as deaf, celebrating that part of him, rather than mechanically forcing him to conform to the hearing world's perceived norms.

Presumably you observed the follow-up to this story. Apparently the students "win": Fernandes' offer is rescinded, I. King Jordan leaves the school with a vote of no-confidence from his faculty, and the trustees will go on another search for an administrator more emotionally compatible to "Deaf Culture" purists. All because one group wants to be 'exclusive' in promoting one special way of life instead of embracing all interpretations of their own cultural group, or even methods that might help to promote "Deaf Culture" in the greater society beyond their cloistered college walls. I have read that some individuals feel that "Deaf Culture" is threatened by technological complements to their situation, or non-ASL methods of communication... Is ASL really perceived as a 'dying' and threatened language like Welsh, or is this similar to the "French Language Police" of the Canadian Quebequois?
I've never been given the impression anyone thought ASL was a dying language, given its widespread use throughout the country, so my guess is that the language situation would be more similar to the Quebec example, and definitely not like the Welsh. My interpretation has been that they view ASL as the only truly "deaf" way of communicating, and anything else is an imposed attempt at forced conformity. Sort of like debates over mixed languages like Spanglish, or non-dominant dialects of English. Language purity = cultural purity.
It's really interesting to hear this side of things, as this issue has gotten a lot of press lately, but more on the "local college students protest something because that's what college kids do" angle...
I have to say though, those kids were organized! They managed to completely block all entrances to campus (eventually they opened up the main one) making holding classes impossible.
Plus, they held a pretty sweet homecoming in DC when theirs got cancelled.

On the one hand, I can see where they're coming from, on the other hand ... my aunt is fluent in ASL and used to teach deaf children. She eventually quit because the stratification was unbelievable and people could be incredibly vicious. Deaf children born to deaf parents lorded it over the kids who had hearing parents, who in turn tortured the kids who had a little hearing or who could lip-read. She, of course, being hearing, wasn't too high on the totem pole, even though she was a teacher. The worst was that many parents accepted or even condoned this stratification. Something about this smacks of insecurity to me, but I cringe at the viciousness in the way many purists talk about those who are ALSO deaf and have had to struggle just as much.
